Trevor Ncube Slams Court’s Decision to Deny Journalist Bail

Alpha Media Holdings (AMH) chairman, Trevor Ncube, has strongly criticized a Harare magistrate’s decision to deny bail to senior journalist Blessed Mhlanga, describing it as a “travesty of justice.”

Speaking to reporters outside the courtroom, Ncube expressed disappointment but said the ruling was expected, highlighting what he sees as selective law enforcement in Zimbabwe.

“It’s not surprising at all. In fact, the real shock would have been if the court had thoroughly examined the case before making a decision,” Ncube remarked.

He lamented the situation, stating, “It’s heartbreaking, but this is the reality of how the law is selectively applied in our country. Criminals walk free, while the innocent and the weak bear the brunt of the justice system.”

On Friday, Magistrate Farai Gwitima ordered that Mhlanga remain in custody until March 14, citing concerns that releasing him could threaten national security.

Mhlanga was arrested earlier in the week on charges of inciting violence. The magistrate argued that he might influence witnesses, particularly his subordinates, and that his messages had the potential to stir unrest.

The journalist was taken into custody on Monday after voluntarily turning himself in, following police visits to the HStv and NewsDay offices.

The charges against Mhlanga stem from the broadcast of press conferences held by ZANU PF central committee member Blessed “Bombshell” Geza, who had called for President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s resignation.
