A Harare taxi driver, Talent Mhembere, 33, has been found guilty of kidnapping Faith Gwena, 28, from Braeside, according to NewsDay.
Despite denying the charges, Magistrate Lisa Mutendereki ruled that the evidence against Mhembere was overwhelming.
The court heard that on November 19, 2024, Gwena booked an inDrive taxi for a ride from Fife Avenue to Riverside Walk in Avondale, with the fare set at US$2.50. Mhembere arrived in a white Nissan Expert and transported her to the destination.
Upon arrival, Gwena attempted to pay with a US$10 bill, but Mhembere claimed he had no change. She offered to pay via EcoCash, but he insisted on cash. Suddenly, Mhembere locked the doors and sped off towards King George Road.

As they passed a Total Service Station in Avondale, Gwena screamed for help. A bystander attempted to intervene, but Mhembere managed to evade them, continuing towards the northern side of King George Road.
Upon reaching the Engine Service Station, Mhembere made a call to someone identified as Purazi, who instructed him to drive to Avondale Police Station. There, Purazi demanded money from Gwena, who handed over US$10. He then threw US$7 in change on the ground before they left.
Gwena later reported the incident to the police, leading to Mhembere’s arrest. He now awaits sentencing.
