Former Zimbabwean football star Shingi Kawondera has spoken candidly about a troubling period in his life, revealing that he was allegedly deceived by the late businessman and socialite, Genius “Ginimbi” Kadungure.
In a heartfelt conversation on The Sportlight with Yvonne Mangunda, aired on Thursday, July 10, 2025, Kawondera discussed the painful loss of his wealth—money he had earned while playing professional football in countries including Poland, Cyprus, Turkey, and South Africa.
Reflecting on how he lost his savings, Kawondera accepted personal responsibility, saying his mistake was placing trust in the wrong individuals.
“I don’t blame anyone else. The fault lies with me for putting my trust in people who didn’t deserve it,” he admitted.
Going into detail, Kawondera claimed that he had provided initial capital to Ginimbi to help establish the now-popular gas business and was even listed as a director at the time. He said the decision to invest was influenced by his relationship with his then-girlfriend, Marry Mubaiwa.
“There’s a story people often ask me about—about Ginimbi. That was my money; I’m not lying or exaggerating. I funded the launch of that gas company. I was on the original documents as a director. But because of his ties to Marry, things changed,” Kawondera explained.
According to Kawondera, Ginimbi forged his signature to remove him from the company’s directorship. He further alleged that Ginimbi leveraged connections with influential people to secure control of the business, leaving Kawondera with no legal recourse.
“He forged my signatures and made himself the sole director. Then he aligned with powerful people, so I couldn’t challenge him,” he said.
When the host urged him to be cautious about criticizing someone who had passed away, Kawondera remained resolute. He claimed that the truth was known not only to him but to Ginimbi’s own family as well.
“I don’t need him to respond. Everyone in his family knows what happened—there’s no one who doesn’t,” Kawondera stated.
