University of Zimbabwe Student and Acting Chief Makumbe Dies in Tragic Accident
A tragic accident at the Dzivarasekwa turn-off along Bulawayo Road in Harare early Wednesday morning has left several people feared dead, with multiple others reportedly injured.
Details regarding the exact number of casualties remain unclear, but witnesses say the crash involved a commuter omnibus and a truck, leaving passengers with serious injuries.
The incident has reignited public concerns over the increasing number of road accidents at this location. Many social media users have labeled the turn-off a danger zone, urging authorities to install speed humps and repair traffic lights to prevent further tragedies.
One user, Kerri Choga, called for immediate action, stating, “DZ turnoff is now a death trap. A large roundabout is needed because people don’t respect the traffic lights.” Others expressed condolences and called for road safety measures to be enforced.
This accident comes just days after another fatal collision at the same turn-off, where a van and a truck crashed, resulting in three deaths and several injuries.
In that incident, a speeding DAF truck carrying washing powder failed to stop at the traffic lights, slamming into a Nissan NV van before overturning.
The van, reportedly transporting mourners to a funeral, was severely damaged, with one passenger trapped inside for a prolonged period before being rescued. The overturned truck also caused damage to a commuter omnibus and another vehicle parked nearby.
As authorities investigate the latest crash, calls for urgent road safety interventions at the Dzivarasekwa turn-off continue to grow.
