Zimbabwean scientist Professor Gift Mehlana has been awarded the 2025 TWAS-Atta-ur-Rahman Award in Chemistry for his groundbreaking work on porous materials used as support platforms for biological and chemical catalysts.
The award was presented at the 17th World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) Conference held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The UN-supported conference recognized Prof Mehlana, an inorganic chemist and research leader, for his significant contributions to advancing materials chemistry and sustainable technologies across Africa.
Prof Mehlana is a leading academic at Zimbabwe’s Midlands State University, where he continues to mentor young scientists and elevate Zimbabwe’s profile in the global scientific community. His work on developing innovative porous materials has applications in catalysis, environmental sustainability, and the chemical industry.
In a statement celebrating his achievement, colleagues and students described the award as a “well-deserved recognition” that underscores the potential of Zimbabwean scientists to make an impact on the world stage.
