Prince Harry Resigns from Sentebale Amid Charity Dispute

Prince Harry has resigned from the charity he co-founded nearly 19 years ago, Sentebale, following a controversial dispute.

The Duke of Sussex, alongside Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, established Sentebale in 2006 to assist orphans in Africa and address issues of poverty and AIDS in Lesotho and Botswana. The charity was founded in memory of Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana.

Tensions surfaced when several trustees called for the resignation of Dr. Sophie Chandauka, the chairwoman of the board, due to disagreements over whether the charity should focus its fundraising efforts in Africa. In response, Dr. Chandauka reportedly filed a lawsuit to retain her position, which led to the resignation of those trustees in protest.

The dispute centered on the decision to concentrate fundraising activities in Africa. In a joint statement, both Princes Harry and Seeiso shared their disappointment over the situation, emphasizing that their resignation as patrons was made in solidarity with the trustees who had stepped down. They expressed their sadness over the breakdown in the relationship between the charity’s board and Dr. Chandauka, which made it impossible for them to continue their roles.

Dr. Chandauka, who was appointed as chair last year, has allegedly refused to leave her post and is pursuing legal action against the charity. This has led to the resignation of prominent trustees, including Mark Dyer, a close friend of Prince Harry and a former equerry to the King.

The two princes expressed their gratitude for the trustees’ service and lamented the painful situation, stressing that the welfare of the staff and the charity’s mission was at the forefront of their concerns.
