Police Seek Information on Opposition Activist ‘Madzibaba Veshanduko’

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has launched a public appeal for assistance in locating opposition activist Godfrey Karembera, widely known as ‘Madzibaba Veshanduko.’

In a statement issued over the weekend, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi revealed that Karembera, 47, and an associate allegedly evaded police during a high-speed pursuit. The two are accused of unlawfully distributing flyers aimed at mobilizing the public for anti-government demonstrations scheduled for October 17.

Authorities claim the leaflets were intended to encourage participation in protests against President Emmerson Mnangagwa, which were reportedly organized by exiled war veteran Blessed Geza.

“The ZRP is appealing for any information that may lead to the apprehension of Godfrey Karembera, alias Madzibaba Veshanduko, and Kudzai Weston Saruwaka. The pair allegedly fled from police while distributing flyers in areas such as Machipisa, Glen View, and Budiriro,” said Nyathi.

He confirmed that the individuals are being pursued under provisions of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23.

Karembera is no stranger to controversy. Earlier this year in April, his home in Guruve was targeted in a petrol bomb attack by unidentified perpetrators. Although he was not present at the time, his teenage son, Laxmore, sustained injuries while rescuing his younger siblings. The incident left their home and belongings destroyed by fire.

In a separate incident back in 2022, Karembera was arrested in Harare for allegedly insulting police officers and for wearing yellow attire, the signature color of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), formerly led by Nelson Chamisa, with whom Karembera is known to be closely aligned.
