Harare, Zimbabwe – The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has officially moved its nationwide crackdown on unregistered vehicles into “full swing” starting tonight, with a stern directive issued to all government-owned companies and parastatals to immediately withdraw any plateless vehicles from the roads.
The operation, which targets vehicles without registration plates as well as those illegally fitted with sirens, beacon lights, and other emergency equipment, marks a significant escalation in the government’s efforts to restore order and security on the country’s highways.
Government Vehicles Not Exempt
In a move that signals the seriousness of the blitz, authorities have made it clear that no one is above the law. Reports indicate that several government companies and departments have been specifically directed to ensure their fleets are fully compliant before being deployed.
Police National Spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, emphasized that the operation covers all categories of vehicles without exception.
“The operation covers all categories of vehicles, including private family cars, company vehicles, Government vehicles, and public service vehicles,” Commissioner Nyathi stated. “All plateless vehicles will be impounded forthwith and will only be released once the proper registration process is conducted and registration plates are affixed.”
The inclusion of government vehicles in the crackdown follows concerns that some official or quasi-official vehicles were being driven without plates, sometimes contributing to the very culture of impunity the police are now seeking to dismantle.
Targeting Criminality and Road Chaos
The ZRP noted with concern that the removal of number plates has become a deliberate tactic used by motorists to evade identification after committing crimes. These include armed robberies, kidnappings, and hit-and-run accidents.
Furthermore, the blitz is taking a “zero-tolerance” approach to the illegal installation of emergency equipment. High-intensity bar lights, blue lights, and sirens—reserved exclusively for authorized emergency services—have become increasingly common on private vehicles, posing a danger to other road users.

“No Excuses”
Commissioner Nyathi warned that the time for warnings has passed. “All illegal sirens, blue lights, bar lights, beacons, and related gadgets will be removed on the spot with no excuses being entertained by the Zimbabwe Republic Police,” he added.
The police have also urged the public to rely only on official channels for updates, dismissing leaked documents or unofficial social media reports that may misrepresent the scope of the operation.
As the blitz intensifies tonight, motorists are advised to ensure their vehicles are fully registered and stripped of any unauthorized lighting or sound equipment to avoid the inconvenience of having their vehicles impounded or modified at police checkpoints.
