The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the arrest of 40-year-old Tinashe Cloud Jokonya in connection with a foiled armed robbery at ZIMPOST offices in Glendale in the early hours of September 12, 2025.
According to police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, Jokonya was apprehended following a swift response by officers after receiving a distress call from a nearby security guard. Four other suspects, who fled the scene, remain at large.
The suspects allegedly attacked a security guard on duty at around 12:50 a.m., disarming him of a Cobra machine gun, a Vallion cellphone, and pepper spray. They reportedly tied the guard’s hands and legs with shoelaces before attempting to break into the ZIMPOST offices.
Police say that as the gang was forcing entry through the screen doors, an alert guard from a nearby premise raised alarm. Officers rushed to the scene and were met with gunfire from the suspects. The police returned fire, prompting the suspects to flee. Jokonya was arrested after a brief pursuit.
Recovered at the scene were several items believed to have been used in the attempted robbery, including an angle grinder, an ectopic grinder with two 20-volt batteries, two 20-volt Jadever batteries, a wheel spanner, four cutting discs, two wire cutters, a pair of rubber gloves, two caps, and a magazine containing five dummy blank rounds.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is pursuing the other four suspects who are on the run,” said Commissioner Nyathi.
Investigations are ongoing.
