Alpha Media Holdings (AMH) journalist Blessed Mhlanga, who is currently held in remand prison on charges of publishing content allegedly inciting public violence, is distressed about his family’s well-being, his lawyer has revealed.
Speaking to reporters after a court session on Monday, Mhlanga’s lawyer, Chris Mhike, said while his client remains resilient, he is deeply concerned about his family and personal circumstances.
“He is staying strong and encourages fellow journalists to remain steadfast in the face of adversity,” said Mhike. “However, he is understandably unhappy about being detained over a matter that, in our view, does not warrant imprisonment.”
Mhike added that Mhlanga, as a breadwinner, is particularly worried about the impact of his detention on his family, as well as the disruption to his daily responsibilities and academic studies.
Mhlanga was arrested on February 24 after conducting interviews with war veteran Blessed Geza, a vocal critic of ZANU PF’s reported efforts to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term in office.
Geza is currently wanted by authorities on charges of incitement, undermining the President’s authority, and theft.
Magistrate Farai Gwitima denied Mhlanga bail, citing concerns that his release could interfere with ongoing investigations. His appeal at the High Court, initially set for Monday, was postponed to Wednesday.
