Kariba Woman Loses Hand in Hyena Attack While Sleeping Outdoors

A woman from the Quarry area in rural Kariba suffered a severe hyena attack on Sunday night, resulting in the loss of her right hand.

The attack happened around 7 PM when Stella Muzambi was resting outside her homestead. Witnesses say the same hyena had been spotted earlier near a local shop, where villagers attempted to chase it away. Unfortunately, the animal later found its way to Muzambi’s home and attacked her.

The hyena dragged Muzambi several meters before villagers intervened. By the time they managed to scare it off, the predator had already inflicted critical injuries, severing her hand.

Muzambi was rushed to Nyamhunga Clinic before being transferred to Kariba District Hospital and later to Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital for specialized treatment.

The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) has since urged communities near wildlife zones to take extra precautions. However, many residents continue to sleep outdoors during the sweltering summer months, increasing their vulnerability to wildlife attacks.
