Zimbabwe Republic Police Commissioner-General Stephen Mutamba has initiated an extensive investigation into the tragic death of Detective Constable Cassandra Hove, who was fatally shot in Bulawayo last Thursday.
In a statement to The Chronicle, ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi assured the public that the investigation would leave no stone unturned in uncovering the full details surrounding the incident. He promised that further updates would be shared once the investigation is complete.
Hove’s death has sparked public concern, particularly after initial reports indicated that she was shot during a covert operation involving armed robbers.
However, after the funeral service in Bulawayo, the family of the late detective raised doubts about the official version of events. They suggested that Hove may not have been killed by robbers, but rather by a colleague, and questioned whether the shooting was an accident or intentional.
At her burial in Mberengwa, a family member claimed that the shooting was deliberate. The official account states that Hove was fatally wounded during a gunfight with robbery suspects in Pumula South at approximately 8:40 PM. She was rushed to a nearby clinic but was declared dead upon arrival due to injuries sustained from gunshots to her upper body.
The family has expressed dissatisfaction with the police’s version of events and is demanding more transparency. They are particularly concerned about the officers involved in the raid and the authorization of her post-mortem, as a person other than her next of kin signed the post-mortem documents.
The family has vowed to seek justice, insisting that they will not accept the current account of events and will continue to pursue the truth until those responsible for her death are held accountable.
Detective Hove, 37, was a mother of four with a promising career ahead of her. She had recently earned a scholarship to study forensic investigations in Russia. Hove was also a proud member of Team Lozikeyi, an elite all-female unit dedicated to solving complex criminal cases, including armed robberies and serial crimes in Bulawayo. Named after Queen Lozikeyi Dlodlo, a significant figure in the 1896 Ndebele uprising, the unit was renowned for its outstanding work and rigorous training.
