A Harare magistrate fined Giant Petroleum US$300 after finding the company guilty of breaching two provisions of the Income Tax Act—following failures to submit required tax returns spanning nearly two years.
Magistrate Nyasha Marufu convicted the petroleum importer and distributor after the State, led by Chipo Muvhamba, proved that Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) compliance checks in November 2025 uncovered the omissions.
On the first count, the court heard that Giant Petroleum had failed to submit its income-tax returns for all four quarters of the 2024 tax year, despite being required to do so by the Commissioner.
The second count concerned Pay As You Earn (PAYE) returns. Zimra’s checks found that the company had not submitted the required returns from January to October 2025.
The case paints a stark picture: a company operating in the petroleum sector failed to meet basic tax-filing obligations across multiple reporting periods.
Yet the penalty imposed by the court was US$300.
The conviction followed Zimra’s compliance checks, which brought the company’s non-compliance before the courts. The court found Giant Petroleum guilty on both counts.
