A tragic accident on Thursday claimed four lives after a haulage truck lost control, crashing into four vehicles and hitting pedestrians while descending the steep Christmas Pass in Mutare.

Several other individuals sustained injuries, though the exact number remains undisclosed.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the incident, which occurred along the Harare-Mutare Road near VED Mutare at around 12:40 PM on March 6, 2025.

“A haulage truck collided with four vehicles and struck four pedestrians before overturning and landing on its roof while going down Christmas Pass. Three people died at the scene, while a fourth succumbed to injuries upon admission at Victoria Chitepo Hospital,” Nyathi stated.

Eyewitnesses reported that the truck, which was transporting cement, suffered brake failure, leading to the crash.

Authorities have indicated that further details will be provided as investigations continue.
