Elvis Chipezeze Opens Up About Exclusion from Zimbabwe’s World Cup Qualifier Squad

Elvis Chipezeze, widely regarded as one of the top goalkeepers in the South African Premiership, has spoken out about his exclusion from Zimbabwe’s squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Despite a standout season with Magesi FC, where he has kept 11 clean sheets in the Betway Premiership, Chipezeze was overlooked for Zimbabwe’s matches against Nigeria and Benin in March. Coach Michael Nees opted for Washington Arubi as the first-choice goalkeeper, with Martin Mapisa and Marley Tavaziva named as backups.

Chipezeze, however, has taken the decision in stride and expressed his support for the selected goalkeepers. In an interview with FARPost, he acknowledged his disappointment but reiterated his respect for the coach’s choices and the importance of backing those representing the nation.

“It’s always a dream to play for your country, but when it’s not possible, you support the ones who are doing the job. Of course, I want to represent my country, but this exclusion has only motivated me to work harder and maintain my form at club level,” Chipezeze said. He added that keeping clean sheets remains his priority, and he is determined to continue helping his team succeed.

Chipezeze also dismissed any negative effects from not being selected for the national team, stressing that his focus and motivation remain strong. He credited his impressive performances to the intense competition in the current season of the Premiership, which he believes has pushed him to perform at his best.

Nonetheless, he was quick to point out that his individual achievements are part of a collective effort. “It’s not just me; the entire team has contributed to this success, and I know we will continue to rise together,” he added.
