Driver Accused of Reckless Driving in Bulawayo Pedestrian Collision

A 29-year-old kombi driver from Bulawayo is currently facing legal charges after hitting a pedestrian in March while allegedly attempting to avoid oncoming traffic.

The driver, who was reportedly operating the vehicle without a valid license, has been accused of reckless driving.

Derek Mloyi, a resident of Nkulumane, appeared before Western Commonage Magistrate Archie Wochiwunga. He has been granted bail and is expected to return to court on July 23 for further proceedings.

Prosecutor Audrey Kufandikanwe told the court that the incident took place around 7:40 PM on March 27 along Khami Road. Mloyi was driving a Toyota Hiace kombi when he allegedly struck Dumisani Ncube, a pedestrian walking by the roadside.

The pedestrian sustained serious injuries and was immediately rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital for medical treatment.

The state argues that Mloyi’s reckless driving—including excessive speed and failure to stay alert—was the cause of the accident. Prosecutors are pushing for accountability due to what they say is a disregard for basic road safety.

In contrast, Mloyi claims he lost control while trying to avoid a collision with an oncoming vehicle. He insists the incident was unintentional and occurred within his designated lane.

This case has drawn attention to the risks posed by unlicensed public transport drivers in busy city areas. Legal analysts point out that similar offences often lead to penalties such as fines, jail time, or the permanent revocation of driving privileges—especially when injuries are involved.

As the trial continues, both the prosecution and defense are expected to present further evidence regarding the events that led to the crash.
