University of Zimbabwe Student and Acting Chief Makumbe Dies in Tragic Accident

The Buhera community is grieving the unexpected death of Acting Chief Makumbe, Takudzwa Paul Chengeta, who passed away at the age of 30.

Chengeta was involved in a tragic road accident on Wednesday around 4 PM on the Harare-Mutare highway, about 86 km from Harare. His Toyota Hilux GD6 collided head-on with a Gold Class bus near Marondera.

At the time of the incident, Chengeta, who was studying Civil Engineering at the University of Zimbabwe and in his final year, was traveling to Mutare from Harare with a friend.

His uncle, Tapiwa Chengeta, stated that the family has yet to announce the official date for the burial. Chengeta, who was unmarried, was the eldest son of the late Chief Makumbe, Shepherd Chengeta, who died in March 2023. Takudzwa was appointed Acting Chief Makumbe in 2024.

Tapiwa shared: “He was driving with his friend when the collision occurred. His friend sustained minor injuries.”

Chengeta’s body was taken to Marondera Hospital’s mortuary, while his friend received medical care at the same facility. The family is awaiting guidance from leaders to finalize the burial plans, which are expected to take place at the family’s rural home in Buhera, likely on Saturday.
