Popular Mutare businessman and social media influencer Blessing Togarepi claims that the family of Aisha Chihota has failed to return US$3,500 in lobola money, despite an order issued by Chief Mutasa’s traditional court.
Togarepi says he paid the money towards his intended marriage to Chihota. According to his account, however, the couple never established a marital household and the relationship was allegedly not consummated.
The dispute was subsequently taken before Chief Mutasa’s traditional court, which reportedly found in Togarepi’s favour and directed Chihota’s family to refund the full amount.
The repayment was due by August 31, 2026, but Togarepi alleges that the deadline passed without the money being returned.
He has since taken to social media to publicise the dispute, accusing the family of disregarding the traditional court’s ruling. His posts have drawn attention to the case and renewed debate over the enforcement of decisions made by traditional courts in family and customary-law disputes.
The claims concerning the payment, the court ruling and the alleged failure to comply could not be independently verified from the information available. Chihota and her family have not been quoted in the account provided and would have an opportunity to respond to the allegations.
