Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos says he remains calm and confident ahead of South Africa’s decisive FIFA World Cup Qualifier against Zimbabwe on October 10.
The encounter has taken on added importance after FIFA penalised South Africa earlier this week, deducting three points and three goals for using an ineligible player in their match against Lesotho. The ruling has left Broos’ side needing victories in their final two qualifiers, against Zimbabwe and Rwanda, to stay in contention for a World Cup spot.
Despite the setback, Broos insisted there was no reason to panic, downplaying the challenge posed by the Warriors and Rwanda.
“We are in a complicated situation, yes, but we are not up against Nigeria, Cameroon, or Egypt. Zimbabwe and Rwanda are good teams, but they are not top teams. So, why should we doubt ourselves?” Broos said.
South Africa will also draw confidence from their 3-1 win over Zimbabwe in the first leg of the qualifiers. The return match will be staged at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium, a venue Zimbabwe has been forced to use as its temporary ‘home ground’ after failing to secure CAF approval for stadiums back home.
