Zimunya Woman Sentenced to 12 Months for Abuse of Brother-in-Law

A 42-year-old woman from Zimunya, Patricia Mukonyerwa, has been sentenced to 12 months in prison after being found guilty of physically abusing her brother-in-law.

According to The Manica Post, Mukonyerwa, who resides in Shiridzinomwa Village under Chief Zimunya, was convicted by Mutare Magistrate Lawrence Mubvumbi for violating the Domestic Violence Act. She was sentenced for an incident where she assaulted her brother-in-law by grabbing his privates.

Four months of her sentence were suspended due to good behaviour, and the remaining eight months were suspended on the condition that she completes 205 hours of community service at Murare Primary School in Zimunya.

The prosecutor informed the court that the incident took place on February 20, when Mukonyerwa confronted Edmore Mwoyowehama, who was in his nephew’s kitchen holding a machete. The dispute stemmed from an argument over property that Mukonyerwa’s husband had left in Mwoyowehama’s care.

Upon Mukonyerwa’s arrival, she demanded the property, but Mwoyowehama denied having it. This led to a heated exchange between the two. Mukonyerwa attempted to seize the machete from Mwoyowehama but failed. In the heat of the altercation, Mukonyerwa then grabbed her brother-in-law’s privates, causing him pain. Mwoyowehama managed to escape and reported the incident to ZRP Zimunya Post, leading to Mukonyerwa’s arrest.

The court also heard that Mwoyowehama suffered a cut on his finger and pain to his private parts, though he was not medically examined.

In her sentencing, Magistrate Mubvumbi stated that Mukonyerwa’s actions were unlawful, as she knowingly put her brother-in-law at risk of harm by grabbing his privates in the course of the altercation.
