Zimbabwean Scholar Abel Mavura Wins Prestigious ISSS Award for Groundbreaking Research on Migrant Resilience

Abel Mavura, a doctoral researcher originally from Zimbabwe and currently studying in the United Kingdom, has been awarded the 2025 Margaret Mead Memorial Award by the International Society for the Systems Sciences (ISSS).

The honor, given for the best student paper, was formally presented during the ISSS Annual Conference held at the University of Birmingham Leadership Institute on July 14.

Mavura’s award-winning study, titled “Resilience Among Young Male Migrants in Paris’ Informal Housing,” was praised for its innovative approach, conceptual clarity, and focus on collectivism and cultural inclusivity. The selection was made by a panel of respected scholars in systems science.

With this recognition, Dr. Mavura becomes the 13th recipient of the Margaret Mead Memorial Award, which acknowledges outstanding doctoral-level work that reflects Mead’s enduring contributions to anthropology and systems thinking.

Since its establishment in 2013, the award has honored researchers whose work fosters relational awareness and supports community empowerment through systemic insight.

Mavura’s research examines how young male migrants navigate life in informal settlements in Paris, shedding light on their adaptive strategies, community solidarity, and grassroots advocacy efforts. His findings call for policy reforms that prioritize marginalized communities and promote urban inclusivity.

“This award highlights the importance of embracing diversity and inclusion within systems research,” said Mavura. “My goal is to elevate voices that are frequently excluded from policy and development conversations. I’m truly honored to be part of a movement that seeks justice and equity.”

Specializing in global development, migration, and international relations, Mavura presented his findings at the ISSS international gathering in Birmingham. His interdisciplinary methodology—blending systems thinking, participatory research, and urban analysis—echoes Margaret Mead’s vision of cultural pluralism and shared human progress.
