Ramaphosa to Take Time in Appointing New US Ambassador Amid Tensions

President Cyril Ramaphosa will not hasten the appointment of a new ambassador to the United States, despite rising tensions between Pretoria and Washington, according to his spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya.

Magwenya explained that Ramaphosa intends to “apply his mind” carefully to the decision, stressing that rushing the process would not be beneficial. He acknowledged receiving numerous suggestions from individuals volunteering for the post, but emphasized that the President would thoroughly consider his options before making a final decision.

The comments come after the expulsion of Ebrahim Rasool as South Africa’s ambassador to the US, following accusations from Washington that Rasool was a “race-baiting politician” with a personal vendetta against President Donald Trump. Despite the absence of a formal ambassador, Magwenya assured that diplomatic relations between the two countries continue through other channels.

Magwenya also highlighted that while the US has yet to appoint an ambassador, South Africa will maintain its engagements with the Trump administration at various levels. He reiterated that the President is focused on making a carefully considered decision that will benefit future relations with the US.

Additionally, Magwenya urged South Africans to respect constitutional rights when Rasool returns home, reminding citizens to engage in discussions responsibly.
