Mutare Girl, 12, Rescues Three Children from Burning Home

A 12-year-old girl from Mutare is being praised for her extraordinary courage after she saved three younger relatives from a devastating house fire — suffering serious burns in the process. The child, identified as Choice Mutowo, remains hospitalized while her community has come together in support of her recovery.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday when Choice woke up to discover flames spreading rapidly inside the bedroom she shared with her nieces and nephew. Despite the danger and sustaining injuries herself, the sixth-grade student from Chitakatira Primary School acted quickly to rescue all three children — aged 2, 5, and 10 — from the blaze that engulfed their home.

Witnesses described her bravery as astonishing. After initially escaping the fire, Choice realized the younger children were still inside and repeatedly re-entered the burning structure.

Choice reportedly carried 5-year-old Pretty to safety through the flames, broke a window to help 10-year-old Nigel escape, and found 2-year-old Nishas hiding under a bed. Her actions likely saved all three children’s lives.

The rescue came at a heavy cost. Both Choice and Pretty suffered extensive burns and are undergoing treatment at Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital, where doctors say skin grafting procedures are required.

With daily medical expenses estimated at $30 for Pretty alone, the family is facing overwhelming financial strain. Choice’s parents, who are also caring for other grandchildren and grappling with their own health challenges, have made a public appeal for assistance.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police Manicaland Women’s Network has stepped in to offer relief to the family. Donations have included food, blankets, clothing, essential furniture, and a contribution toward medical costs.

Speaking on behalf of the network, Chief Superintendent Estina Chikonzo commended Choice’s selflessness:

“In a moment of great danger, this young girl showed exceptional courage and quick thinking. Although we’ve provided some immediate support, the family still needs help with hospital expenses and ongoing care.”

The community continues to rally behind Choice and her family, inspired by her bravery and resilience in the face of such a life-threatening ordeal.
