Mugabe’s Son Found Guilty of Unlawful Drug Possession in Harare

Robert Tinotenda Mugabe Junior, son of the late former President Robert Mugabe, has been found guilty of unlawfully possessing drugs and is expected to be sentenced later this afternoon.

During his plea for a lighter sentence, the 33-year-old told the court that he is a single father of two and asked for compassion from the magistrate.

“I am a farmer and a single father of two, earning US$7,000 a month. I am a first-time offender and pleaded guilty of my own free will,” Mugabe said in mitigation.

His arrest in October followed a police operation in Harare, where officers reportedly discovered two sachets of dagga, a pack of Rizla papers, and a white crusher in his sling bag during a traffic blitz.

After spending two nights in police custody, Mugabe was released on US$300 bail granted by Harare magistrate Lisa Mutendereki.

Court documents state that he was apprehended while driving a silver Honda Fit (registration number AGY 5850) the wrong way along 2nd Street Extension.

Prosecutor Mandirasa Chigumira told the court that the seized dagga weighed two grams, with an estimated value of US$30, and would be presented as evidence.

“The accused acted unlawfully,” Chigumira said, adding that Mugabe declined to sign the police seizure form.

Mugabe is being represented by his lawyer, Ashiel Mugiya.
