Jacob Mudenda Takes Over as ZANU PF Secretary General
President Emmerson Mnangagwa has made significant changes to ZANU PF’s politburo, with Secretary General Obert Mpofu being the most notable figure shifted, as he was moved to the less influential role of Secretary for Information Communication Technology (ICT).
The restructuring comes against the backdrop of internal disputes and factional tensions within the ruling party, ahead of the National People’s Conference set for next month in Mutare.
Mpofu’s former position has been taken over by Jacob Mudenda, while Patrick Chinamasa assumes Mudenda’s previous responsibilities. Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi has also been reassigned to serve as Secretary for Legal Affairs.
Confirming the changes, party spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa said the redeployments take effect immediately.
“This reorganisation highlights the Party’s steadfast dedication to the principles, values and vision of ZANU PF and the Permanent Zimbabwe Revolution, in service to the people and the nation,” Mutsvangwa stated.
The politburo, regarded as one of the party’s most powerful decision-making bodies, has recently drawn scrutiny following a controversial dossier allegedly linked to Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, which accused certain members of corruption. Mutsvangwa has dismissed the document’s authenticity.
Factional divides remain evident within ZANU PF, with some pushing for Mnangagwa to extend his presidency beyond the constitutional two-term limit, while others are rallying behind Chiwenga as his possible successor.
