Govt Pushes Health Infrastructure Upgrade Under Vision 2030 as Parirenyatwa Refurbishment Progresses

The Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Hon. D. Garwe, today led a high-level ministerial delegation on a tour of ongoing refurbishment works at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.

The visit marks a critical milestone in the government’s nationwide initiative to upgrade public health infrastructure under the National Urban Regeneration Policy.

The tour, which underscores a “whole-of-government” approach, was also attended by the Ministers of Health and Child Care, Hon. Dr. D. Mombeshora; Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Hon. J. Muswere; and Prevail International Group CEO, Dr. P. Tungwarara, whose company is undertaking the rehabilitation works.

Minister Garwe said:

“The government is prioritising the transformation of all public health institutions to meet global standards in line with Vision 2030 — a goal aimed at positioning Zimbabwe as an upper-middle-income society.”

The refurbishment project at Parirenyatwa involves three major undertakings currently underway: the Mbuya Nehanda Maternity Wing, the Nurses’ Training School, and the nurses’ accommodation facilities. The scope of work includes the modernisation of both learning and living spaces, along with the development of social amenities such as a multi-purpose sports facility and a swimming pool.

“This initiative is not just about infrastructure,” Hon. Garwe added.

“It is about dignity, modern service delivery, and investing in a healthcare system that speaks to the aspirations of our people.”

One of the most significant elements of the upgrade is the complete overhaul of the hospital’s water and sewer reticulation systems. The outdated, cracked, and frequently blocked piping is being replaced with a new system expected to be fully operational by early September.

“The Nurses’ Training Centre is scheduled for completion by September 1, 2025. Refurbishment of the nurses’ accommodation is targeted for completion by the end of October 2025. The Mbuya Nehanda Maternity Wing is expected to be ready by December 2025,” Hon. Garwe said.

Collectively, Phase One of the Parirenyatwa refurbishment is set for completion by December 2025.

Hon. Mombeshora commended both the quality and pace of the work being undertaken, stating that the upgraded environment will inspire confidence in healthcare workers and enhance the training experience for nurses and medical students.

The government reiterated its commitment to upgrading healthcare facilities, noting that similar projects will be rolled out across the country — heralding a new era of modern and functional healthcare infrastructure nationwide.
