Zimbabwe is currently experiencing a significant shortage of Blood Group O, with the National Blood Service Zimbabwe (NBSZ) reporting that there is only enough supply to last for three more days.
As the Easter and Independence Day holidays approach—a time typically associated with increased road accidents—the demand for blood transfusions is expected to rise, heightening concerns about a potential crisis.
NBSZ’s Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Lucy Mary Marowa, shared the concerning situation with national broadcaster ZBC:
“Currently, NBSZ has about 1,500 units of blood, but only 450 of these are Blood Group O. This is enough to sustain us for just three days, as we typically use an average of 167 units per day,” she explained.
She stressed the urgent need for donations, particularly from Blood Group O donors, to build a sufficient reserve before the holiday period.
“We’re asking blood donors to come forward so we can build a reserve of at least five days for Blood Group O. We’ve scheduled several high-yielding donation drives, especially targeting boarding and day schools before they close,” she added.
Blood Group O is the most versatile and essential blood type in emergencies. O-negative blood is considered the universal donor type, making it vital in trauma situations where the patient’s blood type is unknown. O-positive blood is also in high demand, as it is compatible with more than 80% of the population.
“In trauma cases with significant blood loss, hospitals often use O-positive blood, even when they don’t know the patient’s blood type,” the Red Cross notes.
Zimbabwe Faces Critical Shortage of Blood Group O as Holidays Approach
Despite its importance, only 7% of the population has O-negative blood, and 38% have O-positive, making these supplies particularly scarce. With the anticipated increase in accidents during the holiday season, the NBSZ is urgently calling for the public’s help.
The need for O-negative blood in emergency situations is critical. As highlighted by the Red Cross, a single car accident victim can require up to 100 units of O-negative blood.
Ms. Marowa also expressed concern about the strain caused by road accidents and encouraged responsible driving while urging more donations:
“Road traffic accidents often lead to increased blood demand. We appeal to the community, faith-based organizations, and educational institutions to donate and help save lives,” she said.
To address the urgent need, the NBSZ has set up numerous blood donation centers and mobile clinics across Zimbabwe, but with only three days’ worth of O-type blood remaining, time is of the essence.
