14-Year-Old Zimbabwean Student Creates Eco-Friendly Slow Cooker

A 14-year-old Form 3 student at Chiredzi Government High School has developed an insulated slow cooker as part of her heritage-based curriculum project.

An insulated slow cooker is a kitchen device designed to cook food gradually while maintaining a steady temperature. Its insulation helps conserve heat, making it an energy-efficient cooking method.

School head Victor Zvada praised the student, Dorcas Zemayema, for her innovative project, highlighting that she crafted the cooker using kaylites and polyester cloth. He explained:

“As part of our Heritage-Based Curriculum, students are required to develop projects that contribute to the economy by creating useful goods and services. Dorcas’s project is a great example of this initiative.”

Zvada also noted that Dorcas, recognized for her academic excellence, had been promoted from Form 2 directly to Form 3 due to her outstanding performance.

Dorcas shared that her inspiration for the project stemmed from the need to reduce environmental pollution, conserve electricity, and curb deforestation. She explained:

“The insulated slow cooker helps save electricity because you only need to heat the pot for 30 minutes on a stove before transferring it into the cooker. This reduces the need for firewood, helping to protect forests. Plus, the cooker retains heat for a long time before it starts cooling down.”

She chose kaylites for the design due to their availability and biodegradability.

Chemistry teacher Manzini Mubengo, who guided her through the project, emphasized its practicality. He stated that the cooker can retain heat for up to eight hours, making it highly convenient.

“This slow cooker is user-friendly. You can place your pot inside, even while traveling, as the insulated bag prevents heat from escaping,” Mubengo explained.

The project showcases how students can use innovation to address real-world challenges while aligning with Zimbabwe’s heritage-based education system.
